A bit about the role

As the Team Leader for Freedom of Information (FOI) and Privacy, you will be at the forefront of ensuring our compliance with key legislation, including the Freedom of Information Act, Privacy and Data Protection Act, and Health Records Act. You will provide specialised advice to Council staff and members, manage FOI requests, process legal subpoenas, and contribute to strategic objectives in information management and privacy protection.

 What you’ll deliver

·         Provide specialised advice and guidance to Council staff and the public, ensuring compliance with the Freedom of Information Act, Privacy and Data Protection Act, and Health Records Act.

·         Draft and review responses to FOI and Privacy requests, maintaining the Council’s FOI Register, statistical reports, and annual FOI returns.

·         Keep procedure manuals, guidelines, processes, and forms up to date in accordance with legislative changes.

·         Conduct periodic audits of the Council's systems, processes, and procedures to ensure compliance with privacy legislation.

·         Process subpoenas to produce corporate documents, ensuring associated costs are recouped from legal firms where applicable.

·         Register and manage relevant documents in the Information Management system, adhering to Council policies and procedures.

·         Coordinate and deliver educational programs to increase awareness and understanding of FOI, privacy, and data protection among Council staff.

What you’ll bring

·         Strong written communication skills for drafting policies, reports, and procedures.

·         Deep understanding of FOI, Privacy, and Data Protection laws relevant to local government.

·         Demonstrated experience in communicating with FOI applicants, Privacy complainants, their legal representatives, the FOI and Privacy Commissioners.

·         A continuous improvement mindset with a positive, proactive, and flexible attitude
