A bit about the role

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Legal Counsel to join the Corporate Affairs portfolio at Wyndham City Council. In this position, you will provide strategic, accurate, and commercial legal advice to the CEO, Senior Management and officers on a range of issues relevant to Council operations.

 

Your Generalist commercial law skills will be key in delivering on Council's objectives while ensuring compliance with legislative and policy requirements. You'll have the rare opportunity to develop a generalist in-house practice while enjoying a collaborative team environment aimed at achieving effective outcomes for internal and external stakeholders.

 

What you’ll deliver

·       Provide strategic legal advice critical to Council operations.

·       Develop and maintain a generalist in-house legal practice.

·       Ensure up-to-date knowledge of legislative changes and address emerging legal issues​.

·       Collaborate with leadership teams to support the implementation of strategic objectives​.

·       Manage complex legal projects, including large-scale contract disputes and significant governance issues.

What you’ll bring

·       Expertise and experience in providing accurate and commercial legal advice.

·       Strong skills in at least one area relevant to Council operations.

·       Experience managing external legal services.

·       A high level of integrity and the ability to build effective relationships with senior management.

·       Qualified as a lawyer, current practicing certificate, substantial practicing post admission experience including at least 4 years practicing experience in local or state government in a similar role.

·       A continuous improvement mindset with a positive, proactive, and flexible attitude
