About the role

The City Amenity and Safety Department are seeking a highly motivated and experienced individual to work within our Animal Management Unit in meeting its obligations under the Domestic Animals Act 1994, Local Laws and the Domestic Animal Management Plan.

 

Reporting to the Team Leader of Animal Management, you will be responsible for undertaking the enforcement and education of all matters relating to the Animal Management Unit making sure to provide good order and safety within the community. The basis of this role is animal related and animal management skills are required to successfully carry out this role.

 

A part of this role is to be on the afterhours service roster.  An ideal applicant will live in close proximity to Wyndham or a close suburb within 30 minutes of travel as you will be required to respond to call outs in a timely manner – penalty rates and allowances do apply for the afterhours service.

What your day will look like

  • Providing prompt afterhours assistance as required, per the afterhours roster 
  • Providing specialist advice to residents and pet owners
  • Enforcement and prosecution under the relevant legislation
  • Implementation of the Council’s animal control program and services
  • Efficient time management of your administration tasks
  • Open and constructive communication with your team and other areas of council
  • Handling and impounding domestic animals and livestock

What you will bring

  • Experience in an Animal Management environment is essential, including handling domestic animals and livestock.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to deal with the public across a range of complex and challenging situations
  • The ability to interpret and apply legislation and policies
  • The ability to solve problems
  • Confidence working autonomously
  • Good computer skills (including the Microsoft Office suite)
  • Empathy and resilience in difficult and confronting situations
  • A relevant TAFE or equivalent certificate and animal handling related experience,
  • A current Victorian Driver’s Licence

If you progress past the interview stage, you may be required to complete pre-employment screening, which may include police checks, a medical, qualification verification, and an Australian work rights check.
