A bit about the role

As the Workplace Emergency Preparedness Officer and a member of our Health & Safety Team, reporting to the Coordinator Health & Safety, you will oversee all aspects of workplace readiness and preparation that will cover a variety of emergency scenarios that our growing organisation and workplaces may be exposed to.

Aligning closely with the Australian Standard AS:3745 “Planning for Emergencies in Facilities” as well as the OHS ACT:2004, you will provide expert advice, coordination, participation and continuous improvement around how our workplaces, emergency systems and staff prepare and respond to such situations. This will help to ensure Wyndham Council sites are safe to work in or to visit.

In this new role, you will oversee all Wyndham Council sites (including those that are not staffed by Wyndham employees) as well as establish and build relationships with internal and external stakeholders. You will visit each site for to conduct or create relative emergency and risk audits and assessments and develop and maintain registers to ensure individualised site risk & vulnerability plans are in place and are tracked and managed accordingly. 

You will oversee the preparedness for all emergency scenarios that Wyndham staff may be vulnerable too, which includes occupational violence and aggression, evacuations, site lockdowns and creating and maintaining all associated procedures, establishing emergency planning committees and scheduling and conducting scheduled emergency exercises. To support our continuous improvement focus at council, you will also explore new technologies, duress and PPE technologies and training options to protect our staff and members of our community.

What you’ll do

  • Became an integral and active stakeholder around Wyndham Councils readiness and risk mitigation relating to occupational violence and aggression (OVA) against staff
  • Coordinate and participate in the delivery of emergency management training, awareness, documentation
  • Coordinate and participate in workplace emergency exercises and audits to evaluate the general readiness of sites and associated emergency systems
  • Establish, coordinate and participate in Emergency Planning Committee meetings across the organisation
  • Undertake risk assessments and emergency incident investigations
  • Produce and publish reports around our emergency preparedness projects and trends
  • Actively participate in the preparation of, response to, and recovery from emergencies and critical incidents 
  • Work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders
  • Maintain active Registers that show all completed and scheduled emergency exercises as well as the training compliance of relevant emergency response staff
  • Play a key role in the creation and publishing of related procedures, standards or supporting documents
  • Investigate new or emerging technologies that may mitigate associated risk  


What you’ll bring

  • Diploma in Health & Safety
  • Demonstrated experience working in a role that includes emergency management
  • Experience or exposure working around OVA risk mitigation
  • Communication skills, including interpersonal, writing, presentation, consultation and conflict resolution skills
  • Working knowledge of emergency and duress systems
  • High level of computer literacy, including Microsoft suite of products
  • A continuous improvement mindset with a positive, proactive, and flexible attitude
